Comparative Analysis for bcl-2 and p53 Protein Expression in Gestational Trophoblastic Tumor: lmmunohistochemical Study

Abstract
To investigate the changes and correlation between bcl-2 and p53 protein expression in gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD), we performed the immunohistochemical stain using the paraffin section of 9 term placenta, 24 product of conception obtained due to missed abortion, 40 hydatidiform mole (H-mole), 6 invasive mole, and 10 choriocarcinoma. The immunohistochemical results were estimated as 8 expression indices (El) for bcl-2 and 4 grades for p53 protein. The bcl-2 immunoreactivity was mainly observed in syncytiotrophoblasts whereas p53 protein expression was found in cytotrophoblasts and intermediate trophoblasts. Seventy-seven percent of term placenta and 95.8% of abortion showed strong bcl-2 expression. But, only 32.5% of H-mole, 66.7% of invasive mole, and 20% of choriocarcinoma showed low El. p53 Protein was expressed in the nuclei of trophoblasts in 83.9% of GTD. On the other hand p53 protein was observed in only 16.7% of abortion and no term palcenta. There was a reverse correlation between bcl-2 and p53 protein expression in term placenta, abortion, and GTD. We suggest that the immunohistochemical stain for bcl-2 and p53 protein may help to differential diagnosis between H-mole and abortion with hydrophic degeneration.
